Smugmug was founded by a very determined father-son team. We care as deeply about it as we imagine the Marriotts and Fords care about their companies; it's a reflection of us and we want it perfect.

Don MacAskill, with professional photographer & wife Elizabeth, is the master of code, networking, uptime, and backup. He was the first non-founding employee at Best Internet--the earliest, most respected, and most successful Internet Service Provider in Silicon Valley, which was purchased by Verio. He designed the networks that hosted Hotmail, eBay, and Fatbrain reliably.

We founded smugmug in November of **** because we couldn't find an industrial-strength site free of clutter for photos, where great sharing is the center of gravity.

In its first ten months of business, smugmug grew to nearly *,***,*** photos from almost *,*** customers including Presidential candidate Howard Dean, who depended on us for *,***,*** quick and reliable image views per month. smugmug is profitable with no debt and healthy cash reserves from retained earnings. It's owned by the MacAskill family — including Toni and Ben (customer support) — and by the master of user interface, Jimmy Thompson (JT).
